BCCS CEO Dr. Lynn Fahey: Addiction and Its Treatment Is Complex, Layered

Every week, the local obituaries share another heartbreaking story about a life lost to a heroin overdose. Heroin carries with it the burden of stigma. Most people struggle to even consider heroin dependence the disease it is.

But because it is a disease, it needs treatment that includes both counseling and medications, like methadone. With the right treatment plan, heroin users can achieve long-term recovery, lead productive lives and contribute to society. It’s in the best interests of our state to help them accomplish this.

Some argue that medically assisted treatments play a negative role in addiction therapy. These devil’s advocates deny that those in treatment with medication are actually in recovery.
